International Builders Show - Johns Manville Expands Line of Popular Poly-Encapsulated ComfortTherm™ Fiber Glass Insulation

Denver, Colorado (1/16/1998) --- Johns Manville, manufacturer of residential fiber glass insulation products, has added two new products to its ComfortTherm line of encapsulated batt insulation. The additions include 3 1/2-inch thick ComfortTherm Sound Control and R-19 ComfortTherm Under Floor Fiber Glass Insulation. Sound Control is ideal for reducing the noise produced by appliances, television, radio, intercoms, water and conversation from room to room. Under Floor is designed for floor applications above unheated crawl spaces, basements and garages.

Insulation Benefits
Introduced in 1994, ComfortTherm's installer-friendly features have rapidly become popular in both the DIY and professional markets. The pre-cut, poly- wrapped batts place a barrier between the installer and the fiber glass. The batts install quickly while providing greater handling comfort with less dust and itch for cleaner, more comfortable and more professional installation. In addition, the poly facing and triple reinforced flanges are tougher and more tear-resistant than kraft-faced insulation. Easily stapled into position, these durable flanges also expedite installation.

Homeowner Benefits
ComfortTherm also provides superior performance for the homeowner. The insulation's high-tech poly-wrap system combines a built-in vapor retarder on most R-values with a protective poly backing film, perforated to let moisture escape. The poly facing is twice as resistant to moisture vapor penetration as kraft paper. As a result, the wall cavity stays dryer while maintaining the insulation's thermal effectiveness. Unique to Under Floor Batts, the vapor retarder is reversed so that it faces the interior of the home when installed overhead. The poly facing on Sound Control and R-25 products is perforated on all sides and does not act as a vapor retarder.

In addition, ComfortTherm is the only encapsulated insulation earning the UL mark. By achieving a fire safety rating of 25/50, ComfortTherm can be left exposed if local building codes allow. Traditional kraft-faced insulation is flammable and cannot be treated in this manner.

Finally, ComfortTherm is available in batts and rolls to appeal to both the professional and the do-it-yourselfer. Features include:
  • Pre-cut batts for fast and easy installation, preferred by professionals
  • Small roll packages for small jobs
  • Unitized packaging to minimize floor space and facilitate handling
  • Color-coded R-value stripes for easy identification
  • Fully-enclosed poly packaging with clear, concise installation instructions
