International Builders Show - Johns Manville Unveils New Research Findings

Denver, Colorado (1/16/1998) --- It's the best stuff you never see - research and insulation. At 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, at the International Builders Show, Booth 3483, in Dallas, Johns Manville unveils interesting facts and figures that provide valuable insight into the $14.2 billion-a-year insulation, acoustical and drywall industry. The research includes what homebuyers want, what they are willing to pay and what they expect of their builder.

Conducted in 1997, two major conclusions came out of the study. According to Steve Wing, director of marketing for Johns Manville Residential Insulation Division, "The research pointed overwhelmingly to the fact that home buyers want insulation and energy-efficient upgrades and are willing to forego more glamorous upgrades such as hot tubs or solid oak doors. The research also showed that thermal efficiency is important to homeowners and they would spend between $1,000 to 2,000 to upgrade the insulation in their home.

The findings include:
  • 89 percent of homeowners want energy-efficient upgrade options.
  • 83 percent of consumers are more likely to use a builder who offers those upgrades.
  • 71 percent are willing to give up other amenities to get insulation upgrades.
  • 79 percent would pay more than $1,000 for a Johns Manville Performance Home upgrade.
  • 57 percent would pay more than $2,000 for a Johns Manville Performance Home upgrade.
  • 71 percent are more likely to buy upgrades if they're offered by the builder.
And the two most important criteria for selecting home insulation are energy savings and R-Value.

The research was conducted by National Family Opinion Research. The methodology consisted of a two-part/mail telephone study of qualified panel members in 39 regions of the country. To qualify for this panel, homeowners must have built a home in the past 36 months. The research study had a 4 percent response rate, which is consistent with the national average.
