Denver, Colorado (8/16/1998) --- Johns Manville (JM) lends a helping hand and donates ComfortTherm™, JM's poly-encapsulated insulation, and AP foil faced foam sheathing insulation, for a Habitat for Humanity/Oprah Winfrey project, a house built in Toledo, Ohio.
JM donated 3,000 square feet of ComfortTherm and 2,000 square feet of sheathing in addition to a sponsorship award. The project required the assistance of 200 volunteers, more than 80 percent of whom were from JM manufacturing facilities in northwest Ohio. The remaining volunteers were from the Oprah Angel Network. WTOL-TV Channel 11 in Toledo, Ohio provided coverage of the groundbreaking, progress and dedication of the home.
The groundbreaking for the Habitat for Humanity/Oprah Winfrey project took place on June 27, 1998 and the house was completed on Aug. 6. Dedication of the house was Aug. 8.
The new house is now home for a single mother of three who, after being selected by the Habitat for Humanity board of trustees after a stringent application process, put at least 250 hours of "sweat equity" into the project. She will lease the house for the first six months, after which those payments become mortgage payments.
"The Johns Manville volunteers were wonderful to work with," said Tom Landberg, executive director of the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate. "It is exciting to be part of a community-building partnership such as this. The JM team was not only building a home, they were building hope for the family that will live in the house."
