1999 International Home Builders Show - Johns Manville's Commitment to Environment Demonstrated with Highest Recycled Glass Content in Fiber Glass Industry

Denver, Colorado (1/18/1999) --- Johns Manville continues to lead the fiber glass insulation industry in environmentally friendly products with the industry's highest percentage of post-consumer recycled glass content. This is especially significant in light of a recent study by the Home Improvement Research Institute indicating that 82 percent of homeowners are very concerned about environmental issues.

Johns Manville was the first North America manufacturer of fiber glass insulation to have its recycled glass content usage certified by Scientific Certification Systems (SCS). Johns Manville batts and blankets insulation products (including ComfortTherm™) will continue to bear the widely recognized SCS "cross and globe" emblem. SCS is the nation's leader in providing third-party scientific verification of environmental claims and is evidence of the company's commitment to being an environmental leader.

The SCS labeling on Johns Manville products includes a statement verifying the fiber glass contains a minimum of 25 percent recycled glass (based on an average of all North American JM plants) of which an 18 percent minimum is post-consumer re-melted bottles and seven percent is pre-consumer glass.

Today many corporations tout their product lines as 100 percent recyclable, meaning only that the product can be recycled. Johns Manville's fiber glass insulation, however, is made from recycled materials, further helping to reduce North America's post-consumer waste.

To accomplish this, Johns Manville Corporation works with recycling centers across the country to obtain post-consumer glass. Six North American building insulation plants remelt clean recycled glass with other components to make high-quality fiber glass insulation. Millions of glass bottles are diverted annually from landfills by Johns Manville for use in the manufacture of insulation products. Johns Manville's fiber glass insulation enables consumers to actively support glass bottle depository and recycling efforts in the U.S. and Canada while also reducing energy consumption. The company continues its environmental investment in product development, raw material procurement and manufacturing practices, all aimed at providing the consumer with an environmentally responsible product.

A typical home insulated with Johns Manville fiber glass contains remelted glass from about 6,000 recycled beverage containers. By using recycled glass, Johns Manville delivers a quality product while easing the pressure on America's landfills.
