Johns Manville Expands Encapsulated ComfortTherm® Product Line with R-38 Batts

Denver, Colorado (5/21/2001) --- Johns Manville (JM), a leading producer of quality building and insulation products, is extending its ComfortTherm® line to include R-38 batts, ideal for use in cathedral ceilings and other locations where greater thermal insulation is needed. R-38c batts are specially designed to provide full R-value in the restricted thickness of a 2"x12" joist sloped ceiling assembly.

Made from recycled glass and thermosetting resin binder, Johns Manville's ComfortTherm batts are pre-cut and encapsulated with poly-wrap, producing less dust and itch, allowing for fast and convenient installation, and increasing handling comfort for professionals and do-it-yourselfers.

"Johns Manville wants to provide homeowners and homebuilders with the most extensive line of quality encapsulated products available," said Bill Blalock, JM's residential business manager. "Because insulation is the first barrier homes have against extreme heat and extreme cold, our new R-38 batts are one of the best ways homeowners can reduce their heating and cooling bills."

JM's user-friendly ComfortTherm line consists of completely encapsulated fiber glass products in a wide range of R-values: R-11, R-13, R-15, R-19, R-25, R-30 and now, R-38. JM's ComfortTherm products are recommended for a variety of applications in metal or wood-framed buildings where thermal efficiency and sound control is required. Designed for a friction-fit installation between framing members in walls, ceilings and floors, ComfortTherm batts can also be used in attics and suspended ceiling systems.

ComfortTherm's high-tech, poly-wrap system combines a built-in white, poly-vapor retarder on the face with a protective silver backing film that is perforated to let moisture escape. This vapor retarder is twice as resistant to moisture vapor penetration than traditional kraft paper facings. This keeps the wall or ceiling cavity drier, which reduces the possibility of wall damage and maintains the thermal effectiveness of the insulation. The poly facing and triple-reinforced flanges also are tougher and more resistant to tearing than kraft paper facing.

ComfortTherm is classified FHC 25/50 by Underwriters Laboratories and carries a Class A fire rating per ASTM C 665. While general building practices call for installing gypsum board over insulation to maximize fire protection, ComfortTherm may be left exposed if local building codes allow.

Johns Manville also produces ComfortTherm sound-control products.
