Johns Manville Launches Performance Home® Builder Program

Builders Receive Unique Marketing Support to Offer Energy-Efficient, Sound-Control Upgrades

Denver, Colorado (5/17/2001) ---  Demonstrating its continued commitment to the building and insulation industry, Johns Manville (JM), a leading manufacturer of premium-quality building products, has launched its Performance Home® Builder program to help homebuilders in the US promote the advantages of a well-insulated home to their customers.

JM's Performance Home Builder (PHB) program provides builders with a comprehensive package of JM fiber glass insulation products and support services to help create a more profitable and efficient business. Performance Home Builders are teamed up with JM's national network of professional insulation contractors, who will supply builders with top quality service, products and marketing programs.

"JM seized the opportunity to be the leader in the insulation field, and I'm excited that they are focusing on energy efficiency and sound control," said Jim Boone, a JM Performance Home® Contractor and president of Wichita Insulation in Wichita, Kansas. "In the past, we have offered energy efficiency products, but homebuilders and home buyers have not been interested because the cost of utilities was not an issue."

The builders also can use JM's Performance Home® Software to estimate the annual energy usage and costs for water, heating, lights and appliances for a home. With the current escalation of energy costs, homeowners will want to see how much money they can save by using a certain type of insulation with a higher R-value compared with insulation with a lower R- value. After a home is assessed, JM issues a Performance Home® Action Report and guarantees heating and cooling usages over a three-year or five-year period.

"Now homebuilders have access to tools that will help them create and promote homes that are more energy efficient and acoustically superior," said Bill Blalock, JM's residential business manager. "Becoming a Performance Home Builder and using JM's program can help builders boost their reputations as energy-conscious businesses that help homeowners save money on their energy bills."

Not only can homeowners save on their energy bills, but they also can qualify for a bigger or more expensive home. Through Performance Home Builders' recommendations, homeowners who build energy-efficient homes can qualify for Energy Efficient Mortgages. These mortgages allow owners to qualify for loans that are typically greater than the original amount they qualified for due to the reduced energy costs anticipated.

In addition, Performance Home Builders will have the opportunity to participate in Johns Manville's Model Home program, which educates homeowners about the importance of having thermally and acoustically superior homes. For instance, builders can offer their customers SoundComfort™ upgrades. A 2000 survey conducted for Johns Manville found that 70 percent of home buyers would purchase sound-control upgrades after receiving a recommendation from their builder or realtor. Sound-control upgrades can be used in bathrooms, home offices, home theaters, bedrooms, interior walls and floors.

Builders who want to become JM Performance Home Builders can sign up and participate through a JM Performance Home® Contractor (PHC) using Johns Manville products.
