Preparing for the Job
Loading the Vehicle
When you load correctly, unloading at the job site will also be easier. Loading and organizing the vehicle properly helps you to be more productive and present a professional appearance. It’s an important step in doing a quality job.
You will be expected to operate the work vehicle safely, keep it clean, and notify your employer or supervisor of its maintenance needs. |
When you begin, size up the vehicle and decide on a loading plan for the materials, tools and other equipment you’ll be taking. Be sure everything fits, so there’s an even load distribution, and nothing is damaged. |
As a general rule, place heavy and bulky items on the bottom and lighter and smaller items on top. Also consider packing so that the items you will need first are the most accessible. |
Fasten the load with straps or rope. Remember, when you load correctly, unloading at the job site will be easier. |
As a rule, tools are not called out on the work order unless the estimator has recognized a situation that might require special tools. Basic equipment includes a tool belt, tape measure, utility and putty knives, hammer, screwdriver set, straightedge, caulking gun, and staple gun or staple hammer. They’re your responsibility. These include personal tools like staplers and utility knives, and ladders and scaffolding. |
Work-related consumable materials such as dust masks, tape rolls, utility knife blades, staples, work-light bulbs, waterproof tape, caulking and foam sealants may also be necessary. You’ll have to look over the work order to determine the type of work you will be performing and then identify which tools and materials to take to the work site. |
Material Safety Data Sheets must be carried to every job site. Most employers keep them in a three-ring notebook and put them in the work vehicle. These sheets describe potentially hazardous materials and emergency treatment procedures. You should always make certain you have them available. |
