Safety on the Job

NIOSH Certified N95 or Better

Always use masks approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, or NIOSH, certified N95 or better. And carry extra masks with you in the work vehicle.

Eye protection is also important when installing insulation. Safety glasses, goggles, and face shields can prevent injuries caused by such activities as installing insulation overhead, hammering nails, using a staple hammer and applying urethane foam.

To protect yourself from exposure to insulation materials, wear a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants. Wearing gloves will minimize irritation on your hands. And to guard your feet from injury, wear leather work boots with hard soles or steel toes. High-topped boots give extra ankle support.

A hard hat should be worn by everyone in an area where there is a possible danger of head injury. Make sure the hat is adjusted so that it fits snugly on your head and does not obstruct your vision.

For example, when placing insulation in attic spaces, trusses, joists and other obstructions can be especially hazardous.
