Polyester roofing mat ready for processing into roll roofing. |
Johns Manville's Spunbond Polyester, a continuous filament, needlepunched reinforcement mat, is one of the strongest yet lightest and most flexible engineering materials known. When incorporated into multi-layer modified bitumen roofing products, it combines to create an effective barrier against forces of the great outdoors.
The Transformation into Spunbond Polyester
Polyester mat interlocked by needlepunching. |
A unique extrusion process converts polyester polymers into continuous filament strands that are arranged uniformly in multiple layers, using an overlapping pattern to give the mat dimensional strength. The weblike pattern is then interlocked by needlepunching with thousands of barbed needles, making the mat extremely durable and providing a stable internal bonding mechanism. Applying a heat-resistant agent further increases the dimensional stability, a stability not found in mats that are only thermally bonded.
Performance Advantages
An advantage to modified bitumen manufacturers is that Johns Manville's Spunbond Polyester saturates and adheres exceptionally well to commercial coatings. The internal mechanical bonds (needlepunching) are not affected when processed into roll roofing. This gives the mat outstanding high-temperature stability during the roll roofing production process. Needlepunching also prevents delamination.
